The Babadook Cast4/23/2021
By intertwining the titular scare factor with the identities and arcs of the two main characters, it manages to creep and scare the audience in both psychological ways and through jumpscares. Its a dark, brooding psychological drama that utilizes tropes of the horror genre to convey an underlying message.
The ending of this film is in perfect concordance with this notion. There is such a terrific sense of atmospheric horror that leverages on the constant shifts between internal paranoia, self-doubt, relentless supernatural interventions and the actual, imminent lurking of possession. The Babadook is all the more affecting because it has its roots and reasons firmly grounded in the undying genuineness of love. The Babadook Cast How To Wreak HavocWhich is a shame, because Kent demonstrates a keen understanding of how to wreak havoc via unsettling compositions and jarring cuts (nearly applauded when the shot of Sam standing atop the swingset was followed by a quick shot of mom and her sister rising in alarm and then a smash cut to Sam wailing out of focus in the back seat of the car), and her two lead actors are both deliriously unhinged. Had all this awesomeness been expended on something residing just beyond rational. The sudden and tragic loss of someone you love can affect a person in unpredictable ways, even years after the death. It can approach with a faint warning like a few gentle knocks on a door, or it can jolt you awake in the middle of a much needed sleep. I tend to respond strongly to films that deal with the psychological side of horror, stuff that involves kids and stories in which we witness the protagonists slowly losing control of themselves. I love it when a horror film comes along that takes a completely standard horror template and manages to lure you in with tropes only to hit you over the head with its subversive ability to get under your skin. Carried by outstanding performances, this starts out as a gripping drama only to fulfil its horror potential at the half way mark. Im exhausted and worn down, its true, But I am his motherwhat can I do Children are one of lifes great joys. Never let it be said otherwise. Never. Especially if you are a mother. The sun and the moon and the stars all exist only within your child and your role as his caregiver. To express misgivingsto admit of the hardship of motherhood, to feel some form of ambivalence about itis tantamount to renouncing your humanity. What sort of monster would have reservations about her son What sort of gargoyle would feel anything. Its brilliantly crafted scares are a means not an end, always building towards a crisply linear but unusually palpable portrait of grief and its lingering effects. Jennifer Kent has been working on this for nearly a decade, and it shows. Babadook sound design creepy until it devolves into stock dinosaur roars. The Babadook Cast Movie Over SaturationThe story is really well done and manages to shine as an original piece in the midst of a decades-long horror movie over saturation era.
